The first week of May each year marks Rape Awareness Week, a campaign which both HELP and Dear Em are hugely passionate about. This year’s theme, “Community of Consent”, hoped to inspire organisations and communities to get involved by normalising the idea of consent in everyday life.
We kicked off the week with a movie screening of The Lie, a documentary about the tragic Grace Millane case, and a discussion unpacking what this case meant for our broader community.
Later in the week, the Dear Em team hosted their Demystifying Consent panel, talking to young leaders in the consent space about their work and how other young people can be a part of promoting cultures of consent in Aotearoa.
Finally, Dear Em wrapped up the week with Consent to Moving Your Body, a beautifully grounding trauma informed yoga session hosted at Kanuka Yoga Space in Hobsonville.
Throughout the week Dear Em and HELP shared about different topics relating to this year’s theme on our social media as well. Each of these activities gave us an incredible opportunity to connect with our community and start important conversations around what an Aotearoa based on consent looks like for us all! Thank you to all who got involved and supported our events this year!
