At HELP we believe in working toward prevention of sexual abuse and assault in our community. We do this by offering a five-module safety education programme to preschools, called We Can Keep Safe. Since 1995, 3-5 year olds have been learning personal safety messages through drama, games, songs, role-playing, story telling and puppetry in a style that is age-appropriate and effective.
The curriculum was developed following extensive consultation with experts in the field of child sexual abuse and is taught in a logical, lively manner, which encourages consistent messages in the home and classroom. We Can Keep Safe teaches children how to name body parts, touching rules, identifying feelings and how to tell and keep telling when something is wrong.
A recent independent evaluation shows just how effective the programme is.
