HELP provides a range of services and support to adult survivors of sexual abuse.
Counselling or psychotherapy is a good first step and provides a safe environment for you to work through your experiences.
It is important to go to a therapist who is a specialist in the field and understands the dynamics and impacts of sexual abuse, especially one who is trained to do this work safely. You can access a therapist through HELP if you’re in Auckland, or we can give you contacts for specialists in your area. Learn more about therapy, costs, and what to expect.
We understand that most counselling is based on Western European models of healing and while all counsellors should be respectful of your cultural needs, it can be hard to find the right fit. Because counselling is talk-based, language is also important . To help you with this, we’ve compiled a list of other support services available.
HELP provides a range of Justice Services to assist women who have reported sexual abuse and are about to enter the court process. Our justice services run separately to our counselling services and are provided completely confidentially and at no cost.
Sometimes survivors still need to have contact with the offender, so HELP offers Project Restore, an innovative, survivor-driven restorative justice programme. This programme is delivered with specialists to maximise the chance for healing, while striving for justice.
